“Now therefore, O kings, show discernment; Take warning, O judges of the earth. Worship the Lord with reverence And rejoice with trembling. Do homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way, For His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!” Psalm 2:10-12
We are not a king, or a judge. But consider how God the Creator sees those of us who believe. “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession” 1 Peter 2:9 The fact is that God humbled Himself to the point of horrible suffering and death for our sake. And he has given each of us the ability to judge or determine our own fate as well. Each of us makes the decision to accept or reject God’s grace, His forgiveness, and His free gift of eternal life. This is the most important decision anyone can or will ever make.
We are advised here to show discernment. What does this mean? Discernment is the ability to decide wisely between truth and error, right and wrong – in relation to all things spiritual. We each have the option to believe or reject Jesus, and God wants us to discern wisely and as a result receive all of His promised blessings.
Now what are these blessings that we are free to choose?
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you. 1 Peter 1:3-4
His blessings are too numerous to count, so we will try to focus on the most important here. I will begin with His grace. Every blessing we receive from Jesus is by His grace which is His free gift. Beyond believing in Jesus, we do not have to do good deeds to earn this gift. Paul explains; “But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace.” Romans 11:6. And Grace is sufficient to meet our needs. In that moment we believe, we are born again spiritually and we receive our Helper, the Spirit of Truth who abides with us and is in us – forever. And Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit will teach us all things. These are enormous blessings.
Now think about this – when someone wisely chooses to take refuge in Jesus; not only are they born again spiritually into God’s heavenly family, a royal priesthood, receiving an imperishable inheritance reserved for them that they can never lose; but God will live inside of them and teach them all things — and all of this is His free gift of Grace.
But God promises so many more blessings for those who love Him.
God will meet all of our needs; He is always with us; He will strengthen and help us; He will prosper our efforts; He refreshes our soul; He guides us; With Him we have nothing to fear; He gives us victory over the forces of darkness; God blesses us abundantly; so that in all things at all times, having all that we need, we will abound in every good work; And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus; He will take away our sickness; And He continually blesses us with the fruit of the Spirit which is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
There is so much more. As I grow older and my body is wasting away, He gives me the blessing of the knowledge of my certain victory over all things.
“Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
1 Corinthians 15:55
Grace and Peace to you my friends,
