“Deep calls unto deep at the noise of Your waterfalls; All Your waves and billows have gone over me. The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime, And in the night His song shall be with me — A prayer to the God of my life.” Psalm 42:7-8
How deep must we search the depths of God until He speaks to us by the power of His Spirit from deep within us?
Going deep is a process of us humbly seeking God in multiple ways. reading God’s Word, asking, praying, studying, meditating, and listening. We must put our all into hearing the guidance of the Spirit; and most often that means be silent and listen, meditate on His promises.
Listen … the Spirit is there for you, always.
After we believe Jesus and trust him for forgiveness and eternal life, the problem that remains is that our old thinking is deeply ingrained and rooted. And the old way of thinking is contrary to the ways of the Spirit. But Jesus is victorious over our old thinking.
“For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And the cleverness of the clever I will set aside.” Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.” 1 Corinthians 1:18-21
So the deeper question here is how can we have victory over the old ways that are continually used against us to rob us of our promised peace and joy. We are free in that we have forgiveness and life eternally with God. But how can we have victory over lust, pride, sin, and the ways of the world moment by moment, day after day?
In my old life, I was a “make it happen” kind of a guy. And so after trusting Christ, I set out to achieve victory over my failure and sin. But the problem is that the old worldly ways of success is never enough for God. There is only one acceptable way with God, and that is by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit.
And believers are no longer the same person that they used to be. This is confusing because everything around us is the same, but we will never be the same again. We are now born again of the Spirit, and viewed differently by God.And we are “those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling” — And we must know that “God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” And “in everything you were enriched in Him, in all speech and all knowledge, even as the testimony concerning Christ was confirmed in you,” 1 Corinthians 1:2-9
Now it is impossible to keep God’s commandments the old way so God has given us a new way, the way of the Spirit of truth. And “we have the mind of Christ.” who has come to us by the promise of Jesus our Lord. “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.” John 14:16-17
Now what does this mean? Peace, and victory moment by moment over our old self and the things of the world. Pride, lust, sin, worry and fear no longer have power over us when we abide in Jesus and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit, moment by moment. “These things I have spoken to you while abiding with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.” John 14:25-27
Now your part is to reckon yourself dead unto sin. Reckoning means to count as true. So as you already reckon and believe that Jesus died for you and forgives you for eternity; you must also believe God and reckon yourself dead to sin moment by moment. This alone is where victory over sin waits for us.
“knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:9-11 And reckon that sin and death no longer have dominion over you as you stand with Christ.
