“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Proverbs 9:10
Doesn’t everyone want wisdom? The answer is obvious: “Yes of course, everyone wants wisdom” — but the truth is that many choose to follow other paths or ways of the world. And there are many ways of the world that lead to destruction. But God’s word is clear: “the wisdom of the world is foolishness to God” and “How much better to get wisdom than gold! To get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.” Proverbs 16:16
People don’t deliberately choose foolishness. So why do so many choose wrong ways? And why do many boldly defend their ignorance? As someone once said to me; “That’s your truth Bob, I have my truth – which is just the opposite.” There are numerous reasons. First, mankind is born with a sinful nature; and we are educated in the ways of the world from birth; God and His truth have been removed from our schools; feelings, lust, pride, and logic are powerful and compelling; and self-centeredness is at our core.
For context here, scripture is clear; “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17
And spiritual wisdom is understanding God’s truth and following God rather than self. As my teacher explained to me; “spiritual wisdom is divine viewpoint thinking; and worldly wisdom is human viewpoint thinking.” Our calling is to not be conformed to the world; but rather to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Believers are in this world, but no longer of this world. All that is in this world is temporary, but that which is spiritual is eternal. We are to still use that which is temporary, but to no longer be conformed to it, or controlled and used by it.
Here’s the contrast. “The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. — The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.” 2 Corinthians 2:14-16
Naturally, we simply cannot understand spiritual things. And so Jesus promised to send his followers “another Helper to be with you forever” And we are called to judge or measure all things up against God’s eternal teachings to determine right from wrong. All believers are able to discern truth according to the leading of to the mind of Christ – moment by moment.
And we must choose to be In The Moment.
And the problem is that public education has taught our children to build their belief system upon a false foundation – secular and apart from God. The source of all spiritual truth and wisdom comes from God by the power of His written word and the indwelling Holy Spirit. So that means that believers first need to re-educate themselves. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1
No I’m not anti-science. But I reject the teachings of men that replace God with a false theory that leads our children down a godless path. Jesus clearly explains the danger of a faulty foundation here:
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” Matthew 7:24-27
In compromise, many choose to build upon both rock and sand corrupting this eternal truth. Now, this may bring less painful results than just building our beliefs upon the sands of worldliness; but Jesus condemns this foolishness: “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth.” Revelation 3:15-19
And the result is self-centered foolishness.
“For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools”
Our god is all knowing “You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar.” Psalm 119:2 He is all powerful and over all. “All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being” John 1:1-3 And He is everywhere. God is always in our presence. He sees all things. And our Creator God came in the form of a man Jesus, with a divine purpose – the forgiveness and salvation of mankind. “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14
And in the beginning … all must choose to believe. Be in the Moment. Jesus is the rock and we need to build our life upon Him and his eternal truth. Receive His free gift of eternal life and follow the leading of the indwelling Holy Spirit and His truth to guide you in all your ways. Are you a natural person; or a spiritual person? Do you believe in Jesus – or not? “Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.” John 3:18
Do you seek wisdom? God has given us all we need to know to be discerning and wise.
