“Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you thinks that he is wise in this age, he must become foolish, so that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness before God. For it is written, He is the one who catches the wise in their craftiness; and again, The Lord knows the reasonings of the wise, that they are useless. So then let no one boast in men.” 1 Corinthians 3:18-21
Have you ever heard someone say; “I tried reading the bible, but it doesn’t make any sense to me?”
Actually, I can remember back when this was my opinion. And the verse above helped me to begin to see things spiritually rather than from a worldly point of view.
I was on a quest to gain wisdom. And my goal was to read fifty-two books in a single year, and I had finally gotten around to the bible. This verse stopped me cold. Were all of those books that I had been reading foolishness? As a new Christian with a desire for God’s wisdom, I became compelled to understand what God was saying to me here.
After much prayer and meditation in the word God made this clear for me. While reading through the bible, I had found hundreds of verses that verified things that I had previously come to believe as truth. I circled these verses and wrote them down and memorized.
Good so far – right? Well … only to a point. The point being that I was memorizing God’s eternal truth. But it also became clear to me that I was unconsciously finding my truth based upon my previously learned beliefs, views, and opinions. And isn’t trusting my own views, the teachings of experience, or of the wise men of this world actually boasting in men? I was still in control of what I believed and what I didn’t believe. God was in essence saying to me; “Bob West you are going about this the old human way – backwards.”
“Rather than testing God’s eternal truth up against that which you already believe to be true and disregarding that which you don’t understand or believe – you must first measure everything, including all of your previously learned views and beliefs up against my eternal truth. Memorize and live out God’s eternal truth in this fallen world. And now cleanse you mind, reject the worldly wisdom of men and all that which is contrary to the spiritual and eternal. Follow the leading of the spirit and God’s written word”
“Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:1-2
A new way of life was opened up to me. God’s eternal truth is often contrary to the wisdom of the world. And when the bible does not seem to make sense … a red flag needs to goes up.
Ask yourself. Do I have a worldly or a spiritual mindset?
The great spiritual truths most often go against the grain of the teachings of the world and are often viewed by unbelievers as Upside Down and Backwards Thinking.
Look for Paradox Truth.
Grace and Peace to you my friends,
