Above All Love

“But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers. And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.” 1 Peter 4:7-8

“When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:11-13

So is the end on earth as we know it, really near?
If yes … the clear message for us is to be serious and watchful in our prayers. That sounds difficult. What does God want for us to pray about? Since the end is near, Jesus wants us to pray about the most important things – right? And then Peter makes it more clear when he says “above all things have fervent love for one another” To be fervent means passionate and with strong conviction, or to really pore your heart into something. Do your really love your friends, and especially those who are lost? Well then God wants for us to be passionate about it.

There you have it – the message is clear to me. Jesus wants for us to be serious and watchful in our prayers for others. So Jesus who do you want me to pray for today? And who do you want for me to reach out to today? Whose heart needs to hear the gospel? What will the message of my heart be today? We must counter all of that which feeds negativity and evil with the good news of Jesus Christ.

“for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness; so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober. For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night. But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation. For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:5-11

While the world is consumed with death and terror and all that is evil and negative – Jesus wants for us to be focused on His good news and on our friends and family who need to know him. He wants for His love to flow from our hearts and minds as if He is walking in our midst. Courage and peace comes to all when God’s grace and love rules in the hearts of men.

Paul said; “when I became a man, I did away with childish things.”
When did he become a man? And what were the childish things? Paul became a man that day on the road to Damascus when he came to know Jesus as his Lord and His God. And the childish things were “the worries, the troubles, and the things of this world” God had a mission and a ministry for Paul. And it was all about the gospel, loving other people, and encouraging one another, day after day.

The end is near. What about you and I?
Are we ready for the mission and the ministry of reconciliation that Jesus has given to each of us? Would others say that you are the most loving person they know?

It’s time for us to change.

“And above all things have fervent love for one another, for love will cover a multitude of sins.” … “But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.”

Grace and Peace to you my friends,
