“Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” Genesis 1:26-28
What is the purpose of your life?
You might be surprised when I say that I believe spiritually that everyone’s purpose is the same. And you might reply; “I don’t agree, we all have a purpose that is different for each person. And also I’m not spiritual, and My purpose is unique to me. “I’m a husband, wife, father, mother, teacher, student, salesman, doctor, lawyer, businessman, tradesman, factory worker, scientist … or any one of thousands of other things.” Or perhaps you believe your race, religion, politics, or values defines your purpose. And that each person determines their own unique purpose.
So, what’s my point here? Obviously the “unique purpose” model makes most sense, is logical, and easy to understand. Well, I can’t disagree with that humanly speaking. But when we try to see things from God’s perspective, we must go back to the beginning. Spiritually, God knew you and I before the beginning of time and we were Created For A Purpose.
You might reply; “I don’t believe in God or creation” And my response to you would then be: well then how do you explain the “unique purpose” model we described above. If there is no God how in the world can there be a unique purpose, if everything is random, and by chance? That would require a deep faith, or maybe you’re someone who doesn’t think of such things, or just doesn’t care. But consider this – with no meaning or purpose, life is really only a wandering generality, and its direction is subject to the Whims Of The Day.
And our whims can be very destructive.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.” James 1:5-6
And that often leads to chaos or untold and deep levels of foolishness and evil. But if there is a God and His purpose for your life is certain and easy to understand, wouldn’t you like to know what it is? Well — there is a creator and His purpose is easy to understand, but unfortunately our logic, feelings, personal desires, along with “The Whims Of The Day” continually get in the way of God’s purpose.
So the point is that we will be either self-centered or Christ-centered. Self-centered is man’s way, and Christ-centered is God’s way. And for those who believe in Jesus, it’s easy to know His purpose. But we must look back to the beginning to find it. And this is square one. “Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness” He made us in His image. Think about that for a minute – We were made to be the likeness of Jesus. Now in comparison, that “unique purpose” long list we mentioned above along with everything else that seems to be so important in our lives quickly diminishes, doesn’t it?
“For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth; Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; And in Your book were all written The days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them.” Psalm 139:13-16
Stop and think — your life was planned by God before the earth was created. Now if this is true – that God created us for a purpose – to be the likeness of Jesus.
What would He have you do?
All believers have the Mind of Christ to guide us. First pray and then we must be strong and courageous. Know that He will reveal to you step by step how he wants you to change. And great courage is needed to be transformed into the likeness of Jesus. But not to worry, like a lion, we already have the needed courage in abundance stored within our hearts.
And speaking of whims that pull us away from God, one might ask — “Well, if God created us all for a purpose and in the likeness of Christ, why are some babies born less than perfect in a variety of ways?” And the answer is clear: because sin came into the world and mankind has fallen due to the god of this world. That is why Jesus is required to save us from our self-centeredness. But the truth is that when we see things from a human point of view only – we can spend our whole life in darkness to that which is of Christ.
And In Christ. we can have certainty in all things. “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His Purpose.” Romans 8:28 But don’t expect victory, if you feel called to anything that’s contrary to or less than God’s purpose.
Grace and Peace to you my friends,
