“Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you.” 1 Peter 1:13-25
Do you see yourself as imperishable? The instant you believed in Jesus, you became born again spiritually of imperishable seed. And all believers are imperishable and secure in this good news forever.
We are called to abide above with Jesus here and now – moment by moment. But many set their eyes not on the things that are eternal but rather upon that which is temporary. They remain lost in their old ways; rather than walking in the sustaining grace of the new things that have come.
Do you see yourself as a new creature following the leading of the Holy Spirit and God’s eternal truth? How would you know? It is safe to say that the things that really matter will change. And you will be standing against the teachings of those who do not believe in Jesus. And you will be drawn to the Lord’s leading, and by His spoken Word. What the bible says and how it applies to who you are, what you believe, and the issues of the day will become your driving force.
In preparing our minds for action, let’s consider these truths revealed above.
What is “the time of your exile” It is critical that we see ourselves and our remaining days on earth in the same way that God sees us here and now. As believers we are ambassadors for Christ members of “His royal priesthood, a holy nation” and we have “a ministry of reconciliation.” Jesus has left us here for a time and a purpose, and in temporary exile from our eternal home with him. We are secure in Him; here and now for eternity. “Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” 2 Corinthians 5:20
“Set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” Those who believe and stand with Jesus are saved through all things by His grace. Believers are forgiven (past, present, and future) because Jesus paid the price for us. We are secure in Him. Jesus is our hope, and peace. Abide in Him. Turn your eyes upon Jesus, and He will give you rest. No more fear, no more worry – pride and sin have no more power over us. He is our refuge and our strength.
“These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
“You shall be holy, for I am holy.” We are one with Christ. “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21 And abide above in the spirit of your mind. Walk in His steps, and rest In Him; “Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” Colossians 3:2-3
And what does “knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways” mean? The power of all of the old ways – the lust and pride of the world, that controlled us were defeated by Christ at Calvary. Jesus paid the ransom for our forgiveness. “do you not know … that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
And believers in Jesus have been …
Born Again of the Spirit – of Imperishable Seed –
through the Living and Abiding word of God.
Now … what must we do?
Humble yourselves before the Lord …
and he will lift you up.” James: 4:10
