“For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience; joyously giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light. For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.” Colossians 1:9-20
Is it really possible that we “may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding?” What is the knowledge of His will and how can we know we have spiritual wisdom and understanding?
Have you by faith trusted and believed in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? Are you standing on His eternal truth by the leading of the Holy Spirit? Well then the answer to this question is absolutely yes. Jesus said; “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.” John 5:24 Once we are born again spiritually. The eternal life in the spirit has begun, and we cannot be un-born again.
We who have believed are now born again spiritually. “He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son” He rescued and transferred us (past tense) And now, Jesus has sent the Holy Spirit to teach and guide us from within. “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.” John 14:16-17
Paul explains the difference between the person we were before believing in Christ and who we are now spiritually as believers. Those who are born again spiritually have the mind of Christ, and now have the ability to discern the difference between spiritual truth and the false teachings of the world. Without believing in Christ all people are “natural man” and spiritual truth is foolishness to them. But those who are spiritual are called to judge all things up against God’s eternal truth, and therefore the wisdom of the world is rendered as foolishness.
“These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. For “who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.” 1 Cor 2:13-16
What about you? How and what do you believe? Is your thinking spiritual or worldly – new man or old man? This is fairly easy to determine. Just consider the issues of the day – what do you believe? In order to test the teachings of the world up against the teachings of the Spirit of God one only needs to consider the theory of evolution up against Colossians 1:9-20 above. Is Jesus the Creator of all things as spoken here; or do you believe we somehow evolved as the world teaches. Give yourself this quick spiritual check-up. Now what about the other big issues? Where do you stand?
Paul also asks; “are you not fleshly, and are you not walking like mere men?” 1 Corinthians 3:3
Be honest with yourself: Am I following the teachings of the world; or God’s Truth and the leading of the Holy Spirit within me? Standing on the truth might not come easily for you, especially if people you love are standing against you. But of this you can be certain. With Jesus – you are never alone. If you believe in Jesus, the Holy Spirit is always there – patiently waiting to guide you.
“Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” Ephesians 5:14-17
